From April 12-14, 2024, for four performances in The Apollo's Victoria Theater 1 – a performance space complete with a sprung floor designed specifically for dance – The Apollo presented IN THE SAME TONGUE, a full-length dance, movement, sound, and language-based work choreographed and directed by renowned dancer and choreographer Dianne McIntyre with poetry by Ntozake Shange, a composition by Olu Dara, and original music by Diedre Murray. The work explored dance and music “speaking” to each other, portraying moving depictions of Africans bound together with no common “tongue;” the sounds of rage, endearment, and suspicion; speech impeding victory; nature reacting to clashes of race; sacred traditions in harmony; and silent speech. An ensemble of five dancers and five musicians brought theatrical expression to this powerful imagery and music.
