Haitian American artist Chanel Thervil will create a powerful visual affirmation of the vibrancy of Black people living and working in Arlington to counter feelings of invisibility, marginalization, and isolation. Working with Cecily Miller, Public Art Curator of the Arlington Commission for Arts & Culture (ACAC) and Jill Harvey, Arlington Director of the Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI). Thervil will shape a community engagement process bringing people together for conversation and story sharing. Based on her findings during this open-ended process, Chanel will design a mixed media public artwork centered on portraiture for an indoor civic/public space to celebrate Black presence, joy and community.
