From May 17 - 21, 2023, ArtsEmerson will present nora chipaumire's "Nehanda" at the Robert J. Orchard stage, a 572-seat theatre in the Paramount Center. We expect to reach 2,500 people with the show and our community engagement activities including post-show discussions, the Play Reading Book Club (PRBC), public dialogues, and Welcome to Boston Cast Party.
“Nehanda” explores the legend of Nehanda, a powerful spirit worshipped by the Shona people, native of Zimbabwe and central Mozambique. Conceived as an opera by nora chipaumire, “Nehanda” features distinct musical forms and unique elements—like turntables, Ngoma drums, and field recordings.
