Bay Area Theater Cypher

CURRENCY is an evening length hip hop theatre performance both inspired by and in resistance to the themes of Shakespeare’s MERCHANT OF VENICE, developed through a series of virtual cypher challenges, freestyle and devising sessions, and thematic prompts supported by a deep dramaturgical examination of the text; ultimately taking the form of a mixtape variety show that will premiere at California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) in 2021, followed by a tour.
