Project Title
Touch Update
Fiscal Year Awarded
2017
Grant or Program
National Dance Project Production Grant
Grant Amount
$44,000

Touch Update explores the significant and often subtle implications of physical human contact. Street performances sharing touch as source material are observed by invited “Artists as Witnesses” to replace the ubiquitous “proof” of digital cameras with unique works for sampling project-wide. Dancers on stage physically break through sculptural fragmentations of themselves, texting each other emoticons, for an exquisite embrace. A dance-on-crutches choreography emerges, danced without crutches. Video-masks worn by the dancers play their pre-recorded faces smiling as their real faces grimace behind. Estimated artist fee: $19,000/performance, $30,000/week
