On April 6 and 7, 2018 Cal Performances will present Spectrum Dance Theater’s “A Rap on Race,” an evening-length devised dance/theater work by Donald Byrd and Anna Deavere Smith. The piece centers on a ground-breaking conversation on race between writer James Baldwin and anthropologist Margaret Mead recorded in 1970. “A Rap on Race” combines text with movement and music to communicate the complexities of talking about race, at a time when this conversation is as necessary as ever. In addition to three public performances, Cal Performances will offer education and community programs designed to engage audiences of all ages with the artists and deepen their experience of the work.
