The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is pleased to present the world premiere of slowdanger's SUPERCELL, an evening-length multidisciplinary quintet performance, responding to climate change, media sensationalism, desensitization, & environmental collapse. The title refers to supercells, large storms of deep, persistent updrafts often resulting in many tornadoes. While supercells are terrifying, ominous, and harbingers of great damage, they are simultaneously breathtaking environmental events when witnessed from afar. The effect is similar to sensationalist media, instantly amplifying catastrophic events for an insatiable public consumption. This performance represents the end of a two-year residency, in which slowdanger engaged with students and faculty across our campus, including the departments of dance, theatre, sociology and our School of Public Health. Their September 2023 engagement will include two live performances, class visits and a post-performance audience Q&A.
