Common Wealth Murals

50 years after it was originally painted, AfriCOBRA artist Nelson Stevens’s mural “The Old, the Young, the Beautiful” will be recreated under the Artistic Direction of fellow AfriCOBRA member Napoleon Jones-Henderson. The project will be managed by Common Wealth Murals, which recreated two of Stevens’s murals in 2022. A mural recreation team of six Springfield-area BIPOC artists will be trained in the GoodSpace Method of community-engaged mural creation, allowing them to create an accurate, hand-painted reproduction of Stevens’s mural with the involvement of hundreds of neighborhood residents. The mural will be installed on the wall of the African Diaspora Mental Health Association in Mason Square, the same neighborhood where it was originally painted. www.commonwealthmurals.org
