National Dance Project Production Grant
Grant Amount
$44,000

Ana Maria Alvarez’s newest participatory and provocative Urban Latin Dance Theater work takes on joy as a revolutionary practice. With sound by d. Sabela grimes and songs by Las Cafeteras, joyUS reclaims the deficit-based narrative of people of color in this country as being underprivileged, voiceless, and victimized, and flips it on its head by embodying stories of joy through the technically rigorous social dance forms born out of these experiences. Inviting audiences locally and nationally to actively participate in what they’re experiencing on and off-stage, CONTRA-TIEMPO will create spaces of joy and healing, allowing the collective “us” to feel more connected, loved, powerful, and alive. Estimated artist fee: $25,000/performance (plus housing and local ground transportation), $36,000/ week (plus housing and local ground transportation).
