A new dance by Doug Varone set to Mozart's oratorio La Betulia Liberate, Carrugi will resample the libretto’s themes of heroism, mythmaking, duplicity, and conflict in a 21st century world of comic book-inspired imagery. Varone sees the piece taking shape within a mutable and dynamic visual frame whose key inspiration is digital artist John Toth’s moving imagery, which often employs and manipulates text. Conceived as a 30-minute repertory piece for eight dancers, Carrugi will extend and complement existing work on mixed repertory programs.
