The Boston Marriage was a 19th century queer and lesbian movement that allowed women to cohabitate and share their romantic love publicly in Boston.
Queerness pervades time such that the relationships that were formed on this city’s streets 150 years ago mirror that of the queer people that exist today, including myself. As a queer Bostonian, my connection to this history is embedded in my identity. As a dancemaker, these experiences ignite my desire to create.
The goal of this piece is to excavate lesbian Boston history and translate stories of these women into movement expression for performance. By providing the opportunity for queer movement artists to explore these fairly untold stories together through the creative process, we will practice reflection and share the celebratory tribute that is this dance work.
