FirstWorks applied for NEFA support to bring Thea Hopkins’ project, In the Roundhouse: Contemporary Native American Music, to Rhode Island audiences. Through live, outdoor public performances and series of online workshops and conversations, folk musician and songwriter Hopkins will engage Rhode Island students and community members around folk music as a conveyor of cultural heritage, storytelling and collective memory as related to social movements, and current Indigenous musical perspectives. Hopkins’ residency will build upon FirstWorks’ history of connecting Rhode Islanders with local and regional Indigenous artists, strengthening cultural understanding through access to the arts.
