As part of the “comeback” of our signature arts festival, PVDFest, FirstWorks will bring The Era Footwork Crew to downtown Providence in June 2022. Drawing over 100,000 people, the festival brings together global and local artists for 3 days of cultural experiences. The Era will perform on one of our outdoor festival stages-- bringing the history and culture of Chicago Footwork to the streets of Providence, with excerpts from their award-winning show, “In the Wurkz.” The Era will also conduct a community discussion and an interactive education workshop for underserved elementary students in Providence.

The fierce urgency of racial injustice and pandemic devastation has spurred FirstWorks to rethink the role the arts can play in Rhode Island. We seek to use dance as a relevant and expressive way to foster community healing and to continue The Era’s work in using boundary-breaking dance as a strategy for social justice and non-violence.
