FirstWorks is delighted to bring accomplished dance maker, performer-collaborator, and dynamic teacher Arthea Aoki to RI with Bessie-nominee sound designer Ryan MacDonald in IzumonookunI—a sci-fi-punk-futuristic mixed media dance piece centered on themes of anti-establishment.
Originally developed at Roger Williams University, IzumonookunI is slated to premiere at Bates Dance Festival in 2024 with FirstWorks supporting the developmental process of the 60-minute piece in a residency with Aoki and MacDonald. Attracting dance and non-dance audiences, this multi-disciplinary experience will be “PVDFest Happening” in June 2023 at the Providence Public Library Auditorium.
Strengthening community and context of the work, the residency will include a post-performance Artist Talk and Education Workshop centered on dance and mindfulness. FirstWorks will leverage community partners to expand our reach and attract a diverse audience.
