An evening-length devised dance/theater work by Donald Byrd along with Anna Deavere Smith, centered on a
ground-breaking 1970 recorded conversation on race between black writer James Baldwin and white anthropologist Margaret
Mead. Byrd and Deavere Smith use various renditions of the conversation between these two to explore virtuosity, tonality, rhythm, and texture. Through an investigation of movement, text, and music, A Rap on Race excavates new meaning from the cultural artifact and seeks to enliven the current conversation around racial and cultural equality.
