The Gracie theatre will be presenting Rhapsody in Black, written and performed by LeLand Gantt and directed by Estelle Parsons. This powerful, personal narrative focuses on one man’s journey towards becoming a man, and his experiences with racism, identity and self-image. The two-day project, March 24-25, 2023, will include several community based activities, along with two performances, each concluding with a talk-back with the artist and selected panelists from the community who will bring a local voice to the topics.
Activities planned include a high school workshop exploring student stories through acting exercises and self-exploration with a focus on race relations. A second activity involves campus students, faculty and staff engaging in curricular and extra-curricular events in the weeks preceding. Lastly, local Black-owned, or multi-cultural businesses will be invited to set up lobby displays highlighting and bringing community awareness to their services and products.
