New Work for Goldberg Variations is an evening length piece (approximately 75 minutes) for piano and seven women dancers, inspired by and set to Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The ballet is choreographed by Pam Tanowitz and performed by Pam Tanowitz Dance (company), with the score performed live by pianist Simone Dinnerstein. Dinnerstein is a specialist in the Goldberg, with her 2007 recording reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Classical charts in its first week of release. NW for GV pairs Dinnerstein’s expressive interpretation of Bach’s complex score with Tanowitz’s distinctly formalist choreography, redefining how a new work emerges and underscoring the decidedly female creative forces.
