Lisa Telford, a cedar bark weaver, became interested in the art of birch bark biting as birch is a material commonly found along the Northwest coast. Kelly Church has been practicing birch bark biting for years, having learned from a local elder. As an artform rarely practiced today, both artists recognized the importance of sharing in this unique style of imagery created by biting designs into thin layers of birch bark. In exchange, Lisa will travel with Kelly to find and choose the proper cedar tree for harvesting. They will also split and prepare the bark to be stored. Once the bark is further processed, Kelly will incorporate the cedar material into her basketry weaving.
