Knuckleball consists of: Stephen Haynes (cornet), Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet), Herb Robertson (cornet), Sam Newsome (soprano saxophone), Josh Roseman (trombone), Ben Stapp (tuba) and Eric Rosenthal (drums).
Knuckleball – the music – explores the relationship between notation and improvisation, blurring the distinctions between the two for the listener. The instrumentation takes an established ensemble – the brass band (think New Orleans, Balkan Brass Bands) and pours it into the vessel of Free Music practice. Rhythm, harmony and narrative get exploded in this context and the resulting sound – for the listener – will suggest both the familiar and the unexpected. In addition to the performance, NEST 2 funding will allow us to conduct an interview with Haynes and bring Haynes into a high school classroom. There will also be a post-concert reception for the artists.
