Daniel Bernard Roumain’s (DBR) project is an expansive residency aiming to take place from May 6- May 12, 2024, in Portland, with additional community engagements throughout January-April 2024. This work will reflect the breadth, sorrow and beauty of Portland, Maine’s complex history and relationship to Black, Brown, and LGBTQIA+ people. DBR’s work is intentionally site-specific and explicitly rooted in social practice and both community activation and artist collaboration while utilizing the violin as an instrument of change through seeking and finding resonance. The final culminating performance will be a 12-hour durational piece on May 11th, 2024, at the historic Abyssinian Meetinghouse in Portland and is currently being viewed as a political work for solo violin, ensemble musicians, voices, silence, and found sounds in which anyone can participate.
