From April 9 – 14, 2019, Cal Performances will present Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) for a weeklong residency featuring the Bay Area premiere of their first-ever two-act ballet, “Lazarus.” Choreographed by Rennie Harris, “Lazarus” was co-commissioned by Cal Performances. Inspired by the life and legacy of Alvin Ailey, Harris connects past and present in a powerful work that addresses the racial inequities America faced when Mr. Ailey founded his company in 1958 and still faces today. In addition to public performances, Cal Performances will offer education and community programs designed to engage audiences of all ages with the artists and deepen their experience of the work.
