Through a multimodal dance narrative, (just) 33 is an examination of the life of the incredible performing artist, Donny Edward Hathaway. While he is considered one of the most influential musicians of the R&B and soul genres, he struggled with deep depression during the last years of his life, which led to death by suicide at the age of 33. In collaboration with an ensemble of dancers, I intend to explore the counter balance and interplay between mental health and the creative process. The vision for the project, (Just) 33, includes an expanded cast of 10 dancers - 5 female-identifying and 5 male-identifying– who will need to attend rehearsals at the Boston Center for the Arts beginning December 2024 through May 2025. The New England Dance Fund support is needed to help offset the cost of parking for 5 of the dancers, who live and work outside the reach of local public transportation, to attend regular rehearsals at the BCA.
