Royall House and Slave Quarters

The Royall House and Slave Quarters will use these funds to strengthen our organization through continuing to partner with artists who are invested in creating work about the history of slavery and the contested condition of freedom and justice today for Black Americans. For example, we will continue our well-received Poetry as Protest program series. This grant will help support staff salaries and artist stipends, giving us the ability to attract and fairly support artists of color. We recognize the power of the arts to explore our site’s hard history and its legacies, and to encourage our audiences to imagine a better future.
