Joseph Bruchac’s 2023 one-day residency at SVA is part of a multi-year project, Celebrating Abenaki Arts, Heritage, & Culture, that includes an art show, workshops by Vera Longtoe-Sheehan & Amy Hook-Therrien, and other events.
Bruchac’s programs involve a mixture of storytelling, traditional native music, and talking about Native culture. Q&A sessions are part of the experience. Each program is tailored to fit the needs of the group. The importance of listening, inclusion, conflict resolution, kindness to others, & peace are consistent themes in his presentations.
SVA is committed to presenting 3 sessions by Bruchac this summer as either a partnership with elementary schools, or with Poultney Summer Recreation. The NEST starting date of 6/1 is problematic for schools due to the end of the academic year. While 2 elementary schools are working to make room, they have not yet committed. SVA will host 1 event for general audiences. The project date on this form is SVA’s preference.
