The Hang imagines the last moments of Socrates’s life as a transcendental centuries-long jazz-music-theatre hang. The audience, along with musicians and performers, join the party together in celebration, philosophical debate, and queer romps to envision a more joyous and just world. Written by Taylor Mac, composed by Matt Ray, directed by Niegel Smith, with costume/set design by Machine Dazzle, lighting design by Jeannette Yew, and choreography by Chanon Judson, the project has been in development at HERE since late 2018. Online work sessions are continuing throughout summer/fall 2020, with world premiere slated for fall 2021. Further touring is being planned for spring 2022 for two years.
