Voladoras in Flight/Free is an original performance that is at once a procession, a dance in the sky, music and text interwoven, honoring the migration journeys of a people displaced, inspired by the Ancient Danza de los Voladores, typically enacted in the central square or town plaza, the community gathering space that has long roots in Indigenous traditions. Still performed in Mexico today, voladores are a symbol of freedom. Anchored and attached to a tall wooden pole, more than 100 feet in the air, five men climb to the top, and let themselves fall, they fly counterclockwise until they reach the ground. Voladoras in Flight/Free provides an opportunity to activate a public park as the town plaza and to re-imagine the roots of theatre as Indigenous, as queer, as female, a public gathering place to meditate on flight, on commitment, on faith and vulnerability, which is to connect intimately with embodiment and the intricate ways we bring each other into being
