“NEW” is a re-imagining of Aretha Aoki's recent works, “ZERO” and “The Multiple,” in which ghosts appear and the murmurings of past, present and future leak into the space of performance. The work reflects Aoki's commitment to a rigorously intuitive process of art making and the contrast of seemingly unrelated elements in the space of performance. Reflecting her interest in non-traditional performance venues along with the juxtaposition of visual elements and the moving body, the piece consists of highly detailed improvisational structures that embody the ghosts of a mysterious and unknown family past, and a trust and interest in the inherent, odd composition that emerges.
