Urban Bush Women (UBW) created a site-specific performance of the company’s work, “Haint Blu,” on Martha’s Vineyard (MV) over the course of three visits to The Yard. In March 2022, UBW rekindled relationships with the African American and Aquinnah Wampanoag communities they had engaged in the prior year, deepening the artists’ understanding of the histories and experiences of these communities on the Island.
During their June 2022 residence, UBW performed at an African American Heritage Trail dedication ceremony, an important marker in The Yard’s relationship with the Island’s African American community. UBW returned to MV In the winter of 2023, for additional research and community building. The residency culminated in August 2023 with a week of performances of “Haint Blu.”
