Creative City Grantee Events: July 2018

It’s July and Creative City artists are engaging communities and activating public spaces across the city of Boston with their projects!  Here’s a list of projects taking place this month:

New Urban Monuments | L’Merchie Frazier

New Urban Monuments is reimagining public space with regard to monuments and public memory. This month, lead artist L’Merchie Frazier examines the current monuments in our public spaces that shape public memory in Boston through Monuments in Public Space: Considering American Memory, a series of talks that will take place at select monuments in Boston. This series is free and open to the public.

Teens WRITE (writing, reading investigating theater everywhere) | FABIOLA R. DECIUS

Teens WRITE is a weekly three-month program, in which youth write, revise, cast, direct, and produce original plays culminating in a Ten-Minute Play Festival. Led by playwright Fabiola R. Decius, teens learn basic elements of playwriting, how to critically respond to other’s work in a reassuring setting, the steps in rewriting and revising, establishing criteria for auditioning and casting a play, and directing techniques. Additionally, there are guest appearances by local theater personnel.

Running from/Running to | PETER DIMURO

Running From/Running To engages the Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción/Villa Victoria Center for the Arts community in creative processes, resulting in performances and installation including dance, text, and biographical imagery. The work, a collaboration of Peter DiMuro/Public Displays of Motion, writers Josean Ortiz and Sue Katz, poet/photographer Pedro Cruz, and the community, illuminates the personal within the politics of establishing a sense of place, in and beyond subsets of a community.

breath and balloons | CHAVI BANSAL

Vimoksha will be working with the youth from Roxbury Tenants of Harvard ("RTH") to create a movement-based performance, using balloons as a way to introduce stillness into the day to day lives of both the audience and the youth themselves. There will be a series of workshops using balloons to inspire movement, and letting the slow and suspended motion of the balloon itself instill a sense of stillness and safety. Our project will travel to different parts of Boston, introducing a moment of wonder and connection as crowds pause to observe slow-moving bodies in stillness. The youth will pass their balloons to the audience and incorporate videotaped footage of this into a final performance.

MOVEMENTS TO MOVE THE MARGINALIZED FROM THE MARGINS | KERRY THOMPSON

One of the most marginalized population in the world is the DeafBlind. There has been progress in providing access to the arts for people with disabilities, but very little has been done to include the DeafBlind. To address this disparity, Kerry Thompson, a DeafBlind dancer and dance teacher, will be using salsa dance as a way to bridge the gap between the DeafBlind and the general community.
