I know that millions of Americans from all walks of life agree with me that leadership does not mean putting the ear to the ground to follow public opinion, but to have the vision of what is necessary and the courage to make it possible.”
- Shirley Chisholm
Dear NEFA Community and Stakeholders,
As we approach this pivotal election, I am reminded of my commitment to bold leadership at NEFA. While the outcome remains uncertain, our staff and Board are dedicated to guiding the organization with clarity and purpose through this period. We are not merely reacting to events; we are proactively shaping a future where the arts thrive for all, a vision guiding our strategic planning process.
Echoing Shirley Chisholm, we believe true leadership requires foresight and courage. The current political climate—marked by challenges to democratic institutions and processes, persistent inequalities, and increased polarization—demands careful consideration of its impact on NEFA's mission and our constituent engagement strategies.
Despite and in light of these complex circumstances, NEFA remains committed to fostering the arts in New England and beyond, embracing opportunities for growth and collaboration. Our core values—inclusivity, partnership, creativity, leadership, and public support for the arts—guide our actions.
We prioritize authentic relationships, collaborative partnerships, and support. Open dialogue and supportive networks are crucial to addressing challenges and creating opportunities for connection, healing, and joy. Furthermore, we acknowledge our nation's history of inequity and are unwavering in our commitment to equity, channeling our resources to create a more equitable arts landscape.
This election presents alternate futures and multiple possibilities for the nation and NEFA’s commitment to our partners remains steadfast. We draw inspiration from your resilience and are privileged to work alongside you.
Let us continue to uplift and empower vibrant arts communities nationwide, championing creativity, diversity, equity, innovation, and unity. Our 2024 Voting Resources blog offers valuable information and guidance during this time.
In solidarity and cultural stewardship,
Harold Steward
