Ten Public Art Calls to Artists

The following is a compilation of calls to artists that I am happy to share with the field.  Please feel free to contact me with opportunties that you want to be included in a subsequent post.

1. RFP: Public Art Consultant Needed for Creation of Public Art Master Plan in Salem, MA

Description: The City of Salem, MA, is excited to announce an opportunity for a public art consultant for the creation of a citywide public art master plan.  This project is funded by the ArtWorks program of the National Endowment for the Arts. Proposals must be submitted to the Office of the City Purchasing Agent, 120 Washington Street, 3rd floor, Salem, MA 01970, on or before 10:00 A.M., Monday, November 5, 2012.

2. RFQ for Pool of Pre-Qualified Muralists and Mosaic Artists in Ann Arbor, MI

Description: The City of Ann Arbor and the Ann Arbor Public Art Commission are seeking submissions of qualifications from muralists and mosaic artists. From the submissions, the City will create a pool of mural and mosaic artists who will be pre-qualified for future mural projects. The mural and mosaic projects are to be determined and will take place between 2012 and 2014. The Selection Panels for the upcoming public art projects will select artists from the pre-qualified pool and ask those artists for art proposals. The budgets for the projects will vary.

3. Call for Sculptors for Gallery Without Walls in Lake Oswego, OR

Description: The Arts Council of Lake Oswego is pleased to invite artists to submit proposals for Lake Oswego’s outdoor Gallery Without Walls exhibit. Sculpture will be on display throughout the downtown business district for a two year exhibition period starting in the summer of 2013. While on exhibit, the sculpture must be available for purchase. 
In its thirteenth year, the gallery’s mission is to integrate art into the daily lives of local residents and visitors to the community by presenting works from regionally and internationally acclaimed artists.  The outdoor sculpture exhibition—now comprised of over 60 permanent and loaned works—is a nationally recognized award-winning program.
Fifteen artists will be chosen by a Selection Committee to provide a sculpture for outdoor public display in Lake Oswego for two years.  In recognition, the Arts Council will provide each selected artist with an honorarium of $850.

4. Belle Art Cycle in Scottsdale, AZ

Description: The Scottsdale Public Art Program is accepting qualifications and preliminary concept ideas from artists create a temporary public artwork for the Bell Tower at Civic Center Mall as part of an ongoing series of installations called Belle Art. The ideal artwork is one which is an unexpected and delightful encounter for visitors to the site. Both 2-D and 3-D artworks will be considered in addition to combinations of the two. Up to 3 projects will be selected for 2013 and up to 3 projects will be selected for 2014.

5. RFQ for TeAta Fisher Bronze Sculpture in Chickasha, OK

Description: The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma is seeking an artist to create a permanent, large-scale bronze sculpture of TeAta Fisher in a full body stance with traditional hand gestures. The location will serve as an entry and welcome feature to the campus and will be visible to campus and community residents. A member of the Chickasaw Nation, TeAta graduated from the Oklahoma College for Women (now USAO) in 1919.

6. Two RFPs for Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority Union Depot Commissions in St. Paul, MN

Description: The Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority (RCRRA) is looking for additional artists to apply to public art commissions at the historic Union Depot in St. Paul’s Lowertown neighborhood. The RCRRA board has approved solicitations for two sets of public art opportunities:

Waiting Room Historical/Multicultural Murals
The first RFP requests applications from artists or artist teams to create a series of six painted murals in the grand 300-foot waiting room. The history of Union Depot is rich with historical and cultural stories. A goal of this artwork commission is to celebrate that multicultural history and provide the public with a greater appreciation of the human aspect of Union Depot. This series of murals has a total budget of $150,000.

“Human Scale: Furniture, Small Objects and Other Surprising Amenities”
The second RFP requests artist applications and design concepts for smaller-scale artworks for Union Depot. These artworks are opportunities for functional elements of the transportation hub to be made unique, or even transformed into whimsical expressions of creativity. Up to 10 finalists will be invited to develop and submit a more refined design proposal for their small-scale artwork, and the Union Depot Art Selection and Design Review Panel will recommend selection of the best proposals that fit within a $50,000 budget. It is intended that these small-scale commissions are accessible to smaller artist studios and emerging public artists, or those who do not already have a repertoire of large-scale public artworks.

7. RFQ for 30 Light Street Parking Garage Façade Project in Baltimore, MD

Description: The Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Inc., invites and welcomes the participation of artists, architects, and professional design teams in this important façade project. The 30 Light Street parking garage, located at the corner of Lombard and Charles streets (with a small entrance on Light Street), was constructed in 2009 by Lexington Realty (“Lexington”) as an amenity for the tenants of its signature building, 100 Light Street.  As a result of Lexington’s substantial investment in the garage as well as its office tower, top-tier commercial tenants have moved into the building and filled a major vacancy in Downtown Baltimore.  The garage sits at a prominent entry into Downtown and offers an opportunity to enliven its façade and to improve the pedestrian environment through the addition of design elements, artwork, video panel, or creative lighting.  The goal of this project is to conduct a competition that will gather creative ideas for enhancing the exterior of the parking garage, both the Lombard and Charles Street sides.

8. RFQ for Metro’s Arts in Transit Issues for Three Commissioned Pieces in St. Louis, MO

Description: Metro’s Arts in Transit program is actively in search of artists or artist- led teams to design, fabricate and install artwork in three separate transportation hubs in the region’s transit system. Budgets for the three projects range from $50,000 to $60,000. All three projects involve the creation of public art pieces that need to be extremely durable and require as little upkeep as possible. The proposed pieces will be displayed prominently at local public transit sites, including the future Downtown Transit Center, the Riverview-Hall Transit Center and the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink Station.

9. RFQ for Public Art for East Stadium Blvd Bridges in Ann Arbor, MI

Description: The City of Ann Arbor and the Ann Arbor Public Art Commission are seeking submissions of qualifications from artists for public art at the East Stadium Blvd bridges and the nearby area. For the first time, the newly reconstructed bridges connect pedestrians between the boulevard and the bridged street, both major city corridors. The redesigned streets and sidewalks have increased the green space at an adjacent park. The goal of the art project is to raise the awareness of multi-modal transportation methods in the area, encourage their safe, complementary use and further the connections between the nearby neighborhoods.

10. RFP for Public Art in Courtyard of Petroleum Engineering Research Building in Lubbock, TX

Description: The Texas Tech University System is accepting proposals for artists to create designs for art to occupy a courtyard adjacent to the new Petroleum Engineering Research Building in Lubbock, TX.  The public art budget is $193,000 and should be all inclusive. Proposals must be received (not postmarked) by December 7, 2012 at 10:30 am. Finalists will receive an honorarium of up to $1500 for travel and design expenses.
