Set to the music of Orchestre Super Volta, "When Birds Refused to Fly" reflects the celebratory, post-independence fever raging across sub-Saharan Africa in the 1960's and 1970's, which stands in stark contrast to the painful struggle faced by African Americans during their fight for Civil Rights in the United States. Currently lecturer at the Department of Music and Dance at Princeton University, Tarpaga will show this work in New York for the first time, accompanied by four dancers from Burkina Faso. This performance will represent the final event closing the month-long Crossing the Line Festival, curated for the first time by FIAF’s new Artistic Director Courtney Geraghty.
