On January 12, 2020, Strathmore will present Step Afrika! Step Xplosion, a showcase of both Step Afrika! and select local and regional step teams. A central feature of this performance will be audiences’ first look at “Drumfolk,” a new original work created by Step Afrika! and commissioned in part by Strathmore. Inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739, “Drumfolk” explores how historical events of enslavement and oppression transformed African American culture by inspiring new percussive forms and artistic traditions. This excerpt of “Drumfolk” will be in anticipation of the production’s world premiere later that month and subsequent tour, co-presented by Step Afrika! and Strathmore.
