FirstWorks presents urban Latin dance theater group CONTRA-TIEMPO as the centerpiece of PVDFest 2020, a free four-day signature arts festival in Providence, RI. CONTRA-TIEMPO’s public performances of their newest work, joyUS justUS, takes Afro-Latin dance to new heights as both performance and party infuse elements of Salsa, Afro-Cuban, and hip-hop. Residency events focus on building community, practicing radical joy, and reaffirming the value of all community members, and celebrate traditions, particularly those that have been written into a narrative of systematic oppression. Workshops, dance jams, and rehearsals with a community cast engage Rhode Island dancers, musicians, and community.
