MARIOLOGY is a multi-modal performance which explores the Virgin Mary as a source of faith and comfort-especially in these harrowing times-and as a weapon of control & colonization. A mythical 5th grade classroom is the site of a dynamic spectacle of live music, movement, text, & video, as indoctrination gives way to fantasy & rebellion. MARIOLOGY disrupts ingrained knowledge, inspires imagination about Mary's roles in systems of gender, power and faith, & opens possibilities for personal liberation. An interactive installation houses an archive of community stories about the Virgin, and a constellation of engagement events offers audiences surprising intersections & access points.
