The Joyce will promote and present Ragamala Dance Company in five performances featuring the New York premiere of choreographers Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy’s latest Bharatanatayam work, "Fires of Varanasi: Dance of the Eternal Pilgrim." Pulling from the sacred history of Varanasi, India, and featuring scenic and lighting design work from French designer Willy Cessa, the piece honors the death of the choreographers’ grandfather away from his homeland and invokes the intertwined histories and living memories of Bharatanatayam in and beyond America. The engagement and outreach activities will take place September 22-26, 2021.
