The residency by Step Afrika! and the performance of DRUMFOLK is integral to the focus of the Modlin Center for the Arts' in exploring and revealing the African American experience, culture, history and citizenry in the 2022-2023 performance season. The University of Richmond and the City of Richmond have had a high profile the past two years as both the university and community have wrestled with their respective histories of slavery, racism, segregation, and under-representation. Step Afrika! will be in onsite residency for a full week leading to the presentation of DRUMFOLK that will engage with multiple classes, academic departments and programs across the university campus. Step Afrika! will additionally engage UR's Pan-Hellenic community, Black Student Association, the UR Burial Ground committee, and the Office of Civic Engagement in bringing these issues to a higher campus profile and resonance with DRUMFOLK.
