Supported by NEFA’s Collective Imagination for Spatial Justice grant, The Ohketeau co-Directors hosted a meeting with artist collaborators to discuss our vision. These artists use their work to bring awareness to social and racial justice movements and decolonize the arts, as Indigenous communities’ daily struggles are mainly invisible to mainstream society. Indigenous artists’ incredible work brings awareness and continuity to the movements to protect our women, our land, our resources, and our rights to sovereignty. We must convey our histories and contemporary struggles through multi-disciplinary arts to create a common memory and to unify human spirits. We imagined a shift away from centuries of using a colonizer lens to tell our stories. Ohketeau leaders see the need to address areas of education with Indigenous public arts surrounding identity, climate justice, food sovereignty, MMIWG2 (Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women Girls/Two-Spirit), Land Back, and Indigenous futures.
