In their inaugural duet, “in the Ether,” detritus dance, co-founded by Caroline Bradbury and Claire Lane, investigates the popular histories of women in biblical lore, and reclaims the embodiment of these characters through a female gaze. Their research is entrenched in a lineage of intersectional feminists and artists from the 16th-21st century who comment on their relationship to religion, sexuality, and misogyny. Specifically for this work they delve into re-imagined characterizations of Mary Magdalene, The Virgin Mary, Joan of Arc, Susanna, and Eve. Observing their histories, they utilize this research to create an atmospheric, feminist dreamscape through cloud-like projections, gestural movement, and billowing silk fabric. “in the Ether” is a dialogue with the generations of Catholic women in personal families; the women who have passed on their notions of faith and ritualistic tradition.
