Grant or Program
Public Art for Spatial Justice
Grant Amount
$30,000

Artists Jordan Weber, Ekua Holmes, and Rob Gibbs will create a site-specific, land-based artwork and planting installation in the North End area of The Greenway, engaging with the site's history as the home of Zipporah Potter Atkins who, in 1670, became the first recorded Black land and homeowner in Boston. Conceptualized, cultivated, and forged in community with partner organization Design Studio for Social Intervention and in conversation with the research of Boston University Professor Emerita Dr. Vivian Johnson, the project will include an open call for local artists to respond to and activate the work and site. If by land aims to make visible Black and Indigenous histories of this site and create new opportunities for connection, healing, and agentive reclaiming of this land by Boston’s communities of color. The work will be exhibited and activated across 15 months, opening in September 2023. Check back for upcoming project details at https://www.rosekennedygreenway.org/art/.
