What lessons and stories are held in water and how do we retrieve them and make them legible? In winter 2024 Monkeyhouse will introduce Greater Boston audiences to Rekodi Maji (record the water), a project/artwork by Walter Kitundu in conversation with waterways and the communities they surround. Kitundu, a Tanzanian-American multidisciplinary artist and MacArthur Fellow, will present compositions, stories, and images from his embodied explorations during his 2023 tour to Biddeford and Stonington, Maine. Boston audiences can explore Rekodi Maji through workshops, a performance, an exhibit, and an online screening of documentary film. At the center of this project is Kitundu’s innovative musical and scientific instrument fashioned from a functioning kayak. Watching the choreography required to play his instrument and to partner with bodies of water, prompts viewers to engage deeply to the natural world.
