The Dance Hall in Kittery, ME will present a master class and culminating concert of Ghanaian- inspired music and dance with Kotoko Brass, an 8-piece band based in Boston. Influenced and informed by the traditional royal court drumming of the Asante kingdom of Ghana, Kotoko Brass has created a unique and improvisational blend of West African drumming, the sturdy rhythm sections of the Caribbean, and the joyful horns of New Orleans. With a roster spanning age, ethnicity, and nationality, Kotoko Brass will offer an afternoon master class in drumming, singing, dancing, and horns. Joined by The Dance Hall’s weekly African drum and dance classes, as well as local youth musicians, the event will culminate in a communal performance of a traditional Ghanaian folk song, arranged by Kotoko Brass. The masterclass will be free and open to the public. Tickets for the concert will cost $20, with a $10 student option and free admission available for low-income community members.
