SPACE is presenting Deb Goffe and Scapegoat Garden's Liturgy | Order | Bridge in November of 2023 at Mechanics Hall's ballroom in downtown Portland, Maine. The project invokes Black church traditions, and correlates religious ritual with theatrical devices to make the membrane between performance and audience more porous. This is an evening length performance piece of four core performers alongside a "threshold chorus" comprised of local performers and community members who will be recruited and rehearse leading up to the main performance engagement. A set of large paper flowers will be made through public workshops, and local wisdom keepers will be included in the preparation (and perhaps content) of the piece. The event's church service weaves three simultaneous scores through the large ballroom: the embodiment of the liturgy itself; a facilitative process that transitions guests into, through, and out of the experience; and a movement chorus circumscribing and bridging the two.
