For years, NAKA Dance Theater has engaged in close artistic collaboration with the women of Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA), a Bay Area grassroots Latinx organization that promotes individual healing and community power to create Y Basta Ya! – an intimate, personal exploration of issues of race, gender violence, invisibility, and individual and collective power.
In past years, EastSide Arts Alliance has presented iterations of Y Basta Ya! inside our theater, at our bookstore, gallery and on our surrounding streets. We have also co-presented events and artwork resulting from MUA’s collaborations with NAKA.
EastSide will present 5 performances of this new piece at our Cultural Center theater, offering discounted tickets for our community neighbors. Each performance will begin with a workshop led by women from the original community performances to set the stage for the new piece, telling stories, reflecting on their individual/collective transformation and dreaming about the future.
