Inspired by Harriet Araminta Tubman, conductor of the Underground Railroad, Minty Fresh Circus is an Afrofuturistic, trans-disciplinary contemporary circus in seven sections performed by a cast of seven Black performers. We have created a theatrical world for all ages where migration, nonverbal communication, and sovereignty are foundational pillars of a magical, physical theater experience. Through Black music, circus, and movement, the audience experiences freedom portals, exploring oasis spaces of healing, joy, adornment, ritual, beauty, rest, and protection. In this 60-70 minute performance, we layer acrobatics, aerial, clowning, object manipulation (such as juggling) with Black-sourced movement to render a narrative of blood memory, literally propelling Black bodies towards spatial freedom and liberation. The energy of call-and-response within Black culture will serve as a circular structure within the arc of the show: the audience will be engaged with, versus presented to.
