This will be the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra's first performance in Maine since 1990. The occasion is made all the more special by 2024 being the (still touring!) bandleader Marshall Allen's 100th birthday year.

The iconic group, originally formed in 1952, will perform what we expect to be a capacity concert at SPACE. Their shows present a unique combination of avant-garde jazz, soul and r&b, theater, dance, poetry, and fashion, all through an Afro-futurist lens— an artistic-academic-philosophical field which they are true pioneers in.

As an educational and community engagement opportunity, we will open up the soundcheck for music students— youth from the Maine Academy for Modern Music, college students in the local jazz programs, and performers of all ages from the Portland Conservatory of Music.
