We are requesting funding assistance to host the Brooklyn-based Spiderwoman Theatrical company in Vermillion, South Dakota and the USD campus for a seven-day residency February 19-25, 2024. Spiderwoman Theatre is a multigenerational theatre project which brings together performers, designers and cultural practitioners from Native and First Nations communities across Turtle Island. The show they are bringing to Vermillion, titled Misdemeanor Dream, weaves uncomfortable conversations with irreverent humor to shed light on personal and community stories of chaos and reclamation, of tricksters and spirits, of journeys through the star worlds and the between worlds. This residency is planned to intersect with several other initiatives that will celebrate Native arts and Native heritage. In addition to two performances of Misdemeanor Dream, the residency will have a focus on community interaction that includes workshops on story weaving and fabrics.
