As many know well, the Trump administration has recently announced significant changes to federally funded arts programs and institutions and is attempting to dismantle DEIA policies more broadly. The New England Foundation for the Arts is closely monitoring these developments to assess how they may impact our current programs and future offerings. As of now, there are no changes to our existing grant programs’ design or operations.
We are encouraged by the work of those pushing back against these changes. As of Friday, February 21, a Maryland federal judge issued a preliminary injunction that temporarily blocks the government from terminating any equity-related grants or contracts. It also bars the government from forcing contractors and grantees to certify that they aren't promoting DEI. Additionally, Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell and 12 other Attorneys General across the country released a statement that affirms the crucial value of initiatives and policies that seek to remedy inequity.
In the face of these changes, NEFA’s values and mission remain steadfast and focused; we believe in equitable access to the arts and will continue our support of arts organizations and artists through grantmaking, partnerships, and advocacy across New England, the nation, and beyond.
