Ain Gordon's "Not What Happened" is an evening-length theatrical duet between an historical re-enactor and the 19th-century woman she portrays. The work raises unsettling questions surrounding history making -- its capacity to marginalize as well as to memorialize -- and invites presenters to engage their communities at the intersection of performance, history and community identity. An associated traveling exhibition of collaborator Forrest Holzapfel's historically-inspired photographs extends the dimensions and duration of the project.
