Dance Theatre of Harlem makes a triumphant return to Jacob's Pillow for the 2013 Festival. In 1969, Arthur Mitchell, the first African-American member of the New York City Ballet, broke new ground a second time by founding the Dance Theatre of Harlem. The company flourished until 2004, when it was forced to close due to financial hardship. In 2010 the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble was invited to the 2010 Festival and sold-out six performances at the intimate Doris Duke Theatre, setting the stage for a return engagement with the main company.
